Summary of Math Booster Club Meeting – September 29, 2001

Coach’s Seminar – Mr. Holbrook

Practices will be held Saturdays 12 noon   - 5:00 pm (students are welcome to come as early as 9:00 am when Mr. Holbrook has a younger class) & Sundays 12 noon – 4:00 pm.   Mr. Holbrook will need parents to help out at competitions.   He would like us to arrange for items that will give the students recognition for their accomplishments.  He would also like to have a math competition here next spring for students in the 4th through 8th grades.

Competitions:

NJ Math League – Starts in October, and continues monthly for 6 months.  We field 4 teams of 5 students each (a total of 20 students).   This takes place in school and is done individually.   We have come in first the last 4 years.

Atlantic Pacific – This competition includes schools from the US, Canada, and sometimes other nations.   This takes place in school monthly, beginning November, and involves individual competitions.  We have been the champs or co-champs for the last 5 years.   Stuyvesant is our main competitor.

Mandelbrot – This is the most difficult national competition and includes only the best schools.   It is made up of 4 rounds per year, with an individual and a team portion in each round.  These occur on weekends.  We won 2 years ago.

AMC – This competition is broken down into 12 th graders and below and 10th graders and below.   It occurs the Tuesday before and the Wednesday after the February vacation break.  There will be practice at the Academy over February break.  1% of the combined 9th & 10th graders and 5% of the 11th & 12th graders go to the next level – AIME.  It takes places 5 or 6 weeks later.  It involves 15 questions over 3 hours.  The median grade is 0!   45 of our students made it to the AIME last year. The top 200 students to compete in the AIME go to the US AMO Olympiad.   Last year we had 4 students at this level.   This year these students will get flown to MIT and get a 4 day trip to colleges in the Boston area.  They will get to go to a training program, MOP.   A team of 6 is then chosen to go to Washington to compete internationally.   Last year China won.  The US tied with Russia for second place.

Competitions Involving Travel: – Parents are encouraged to come along.  Your help will be appreciated and you will get the chance to see your sons and daughters compete.  You will have to pay your own expenses.  These trips involve hiring buses which run about $1200 - $1400, meals, and in some cases, accommodations.   The Booster Club will have to raise money through donations to help cover these expenses.

Harvard/MIT – Early March.   This will require a bus and accommodations.   Last year was our first appearance.   We came in 2ndplace.  Our 9th grade won 1st & 2nd individual awards.

NY State All Star – Albany area.   This will be done in one day and will only require a bus.   It is a warm up for the ARML.

ARML – Penn State.   This is held on the first weekend after Memorial weekend.   We will field 3 teams and need 1 bus and accommodations.
